If the game had been called after only one quarter the Greene County girls basketballm would have won. The Rams were ahead of the Collins-Maxwell/Baxter Raiders 12-8 at the end of the first quarter. But, games are four quarters long, and in the next three quarters the Rams scored only 12 points. The final score was 40-24 with the Raiders getting the win.
The Rams and head coach Dean Lyons are now 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference.
The only points the Rams put on the board in the second quarter were two free throws by senior Taylor Wessling. The Raiders’ shooting was only a little better and the score was tied at 14 at halftime.
Ram senior Kenna Marquardt started the second half with a free throw to put the Rams up 15-14, but the Raiders made three 3-point shots in the next to minutes to take a 23-15 lead. The Rams scored just two 2-point baskets in the quarter to end the quarter down 29-19.
For the game the Rams made nine of 42 shots for 21 percent shooting. They were more successful at the free throw line, making six of nine shots for 67 percent. The Rams committed 18 turnovers to the Raiders’ 16.
Junior Laurin Lyons scored nine points and had five rebounds. Lyons will not play Friday against North Polk after a collision late in the fourth quarter put her on the disabled list as a concussion precaution.
Marquardt scored seven points and had six rebounds. Onica Delp also had six rebounds and scored two points. Wessling, senior Hannah Promes and junior Ashley Millard scored two points each. Those were Millard’s first varsity points, scored on a third quarter basket.
C-M/B is now 1-1 in the HOIAC and overall, having lost their season opener to Nevada.
